A trek to the mysterious glacial Roopkund Lake is a must-do for an avid trekker. Battling several adversities common to the Himalayas, this water body perched in the laps of the snow clad Mt. Trishul is situated at an altitude of 16,499ft. It is most attractive for the human skeletons lying at the bottom of the lake, which are distinctly visible when the snow melts. Thus having several visitors although uninhabitable.
The route along this Roopkund trekking expedition is a fascinating journey of discovering the most pristine of Himalayan contribution of oak and blooming rhododendron forests. Of fairly easy nature, the trail has several ascents and steep downhill hikes, which go past mountain rivers that flow in abundance.
With some of the finest base camp locations such as Ali Bungyal, the Roopkund Trek has everything going for it.

Day 1 - Kathgodam Railway Station - Kathgodam - Lohajung
River Side Drive, Pindar Valley, Almora Hill Station
After an overnight journey from Delhi or other nearby cities, arrive at Kathgodam Railway Station. From here you’ll drive to Lohajung, start point of the Roopkund Trekking Expedition. You’ll realise the Himalayan landscape as you climb uphill and drive by river sides. Cross the beautiful Pindar Valley and pass through the lovely hill station of Almora. Overnight stay at a hotel/ tents at Lohajung.
Day 2 - Trek from Lohajung - Didna Village
Lohajung Pass, Bedni Ganga River, Steady uphill trekking
Today you’ll begin the trek to Roopkund Glacier Lake. Take the Lord Curzon trail from Lohajung and follow a steady uphill trek through the Lohajung Pass, which eventually leads to a downhill trail to the Bedni River. Cross the bridge over the river and traverse through mixed forests of oak and bamboo to arrive at Didna Village. Continue through the village to reach open meadows. This is your first base camp on the trek route. Pitch tents. Retire for the night.
Day 3 - Trek from Didna Village to Bedni Bugyal
Steep Trekking, Oak and Bamboo Stretches, Garhwal Himalayas, Bedni Bugyal via Ali Bugyal
Wake up early and complete the exercise routine to retain fitness to battle the high altitude climate. After a wholesome breakfast, leave base camp to begin a day of steep trekking through oak stretches and long stands of bamboo. Admire the stunning views of the Garhwal Himalayan ranges as they appear ahead of you. Arrive at one of the finest camping grounds with stunning views on this side of the Himalayas as you enter open alpine grazing meadows of Ali Bugyal. From here head to Bedni Bugyal where we camp for the day.
Day 4 - Trek from Bedni Bugyal to Patar Nachauni
This is a relatively easy day of trekking. After breakfast, head out on a short trek, which takes you to the other side of the ridge. A keen eye can spot a Himalayan Magpie. Else you’ll definitely be an admirer of the great natural beauty that engulfs you from all directions. After a few hours of trekking arrive at Patar Nachauni, which is yet again the most fascinating of destinations along the Roopkund trek. Camp here for the night and wake up to the most amazing views.
Day 5 - Trek from Patar Nachauni to Bhagwabasa
High Altitude Trekking, Barren Campsite at Bhagwabasa, Northern Icy Winds
Today is the day for some high altitude trekking. You’ll be scaling heights from 12,500ft to 14,500ft. Be prepared for some rough weather conditions causing shortness of breath, mild headache, and tiredness. Follow a zigzag route to Kalu Vinayak. From here, you’ll continue to Bhagwabasa (4,100m) campsite, which is a desolate, barren landscape when compared to Ali Bugyal. Settle down for the night in tents.
Day 6 - Trek from Bhagwabasa to Roopkund Lake, back to Bedni Bugyal via Bhagwabasa
High Altitude Glacial Roopkund Lake, Mystery Surrounding Skeletons, Mt. Trishul Massif, Rock-strewn Glaciers, Snow-capped Mountains
With D-day knocking at your door, you’ll start as early as 5am from base camp to begin a gradual uphill trek to the high altitude glacier lake scaling heights up to 16,500ft. With 5km of trekking behind you, you’ll begin a steep ascent for about 3 ½hrs to arrive at the mysterious Roopkund Lake.
This uninhabited landmark perched in the laps of Mt. Trishul has overwhelmed many travellers as it’s abound with innumerable stories. From here, trek for another half hour to reach Junar Gali, the highest point on this trail. Trek back to the base camp at Bedni Bugyal on yet another scenic trail from where you can see the Garhwal Himalayas in full glory extending up to Gangotri. These ranges have a fantastic backdrop of Mt. Trishul and Nanda Ghunti. Retire for the night at Bedni Bugyal.
Day 7 - Trek from Bedni Bugyal to Lohajung via Wan
Trekking, Rhododenron Forests, Alpine Meadows
As you start your return trek, bid goodbye to an unforgettable experience as you can capture a glimpse of Mt. Trishul from Bedni Bugyal on a clear day from Kanakdhar, en route Wan. Follow steep descents, gradual climbs through forests packed with blooming rhododendrons. After a steep descent for the Neel Ganga, arrive at Wan. From here, you’ll drive to Lohajung. Spend the night here.
Day 8 - Trek from Lohajung to Kathgodam
Trekking, Trip Ends Here
Today is your last day in the Himalayas. Spend the day looking around Lohajung. It’s your time to relax after a rewarding Roopkund trekking. Stay overnight. Drive to Kathgodam to board a train for your journey home.
